Volunteers Provide Life Blood to Broward's Hungry
March 15th, 2005

More than 500 volunteers a year from all walks of life bring both food and positive support to Broward County's hungry on a daily basis through The Cooperative Feeding Program's Community Kitchen on Broward Boulevard and 33rd Terrace.

"It's a wonderful way for us to give back to the community and to also build up our own team spirit", commented Shannon Dunavent, General Manager of the Fort Lauderdale/Sunrise Hilton Hotel, as she served up a piping hot plate of spaghetti.

Dunavent and seven of Hilton's staff recently volunteered for the morning breakfast shift. They dished up more than 300 meals in two hours to the voracious clients - a typical day at The Cooperative Feeding Program. The Volunteer Program is a key component for agencies feeding the homeless in Broward County.

"Without the tens of thousands of volunteer hours of service given each year, we would never be able to serve the over 90,000 hot meals and 800,000 meals given out through the Emergency Food Pantry", commented Hal Nolan, who coordinates The Cooperative Feeding Program's Volunteers. Nolan, himself a volunteer for the past 12 years at the agency, was recently awarded the "Community Quarterback Award" by the Miami Dolphins Foundation and NFL Charities.

"The volunteers help us with food and clothing drives as well as in the kitchen and Emergency Pantry", added Nolan. "But speaking as a volunteer, I get so much more back than I give. Being a volunteer has brought a real meaning of service to my life".

Volunteers from The Cooperative Feeding Program also deliver meals and some needed social contact to the sick and elderly who cannot leave their homes. Services also include haircuts, hot showers and job training.
